The largest compensation paid by insurers last year for a house damaged by a fire amounted to more than 1.13 million lei (€231,000), the Union of Insurers (UNSAR) announced on Friday. It is about a house in which both the building and the goods in it were insured, UNSAR representatives informed HotNews.ro.
Last year, 82% of the top 50 claims paid by UNSAR member insurers for home insurance were also for fire damage.
The total amount of compensation paid in these cases is 11.5 million lei, which is 21% more than in 2021.
This ranking is completed by losses caused by other risks, such as: landslides (12%), damage to waterworks (4%) and floods as natural phenomena (2%).
The union says “an average of 19 fires hit homes in Romania every day, and they remain at the top of the risks that most threaten the homes we live in.”
Last year, homeowners received more than 43.3 million lei in compensation from UNSAR member insurers just for fire damage coverage, which is more than 69% more than in 2021.
The number of compensated loss files due to the occurrence of fire risk also recorded an increase of 74% compared to 2021.
Additional home insurance offers an additional level of protection compared to the mandatory PAD, in addition to natural disasters, it covers other risks such as: fire, explosion, body fall, flood caused by damage to water and sewage systems, air conditioning, heating, and other contingencies situations – floods caused by neighbors, malfunctions of the heating plant, damage to electronic goods / household appliances, etc.
Additional home insurance can only be taken out for buildings that are insured under a mandatory policy (PAD), which covers 3 catastrophic risks (earthquake, flood and landslides) up to a limit of €20,000 and €10,000 respectively, depending on the type of construction.
