However, without using the term cyber attack, the tribunal in The Hague said it was forced to respond urgently to “respond to this cyber security incident” and “mitigate the consequences”.

“Responses have been provided and additional security measures have been taken with the help of the host country’s authorities,” the international jurisdiction based in The Hague, Netherlands, said in a brief statement, declining to provide further details.

In recent years, the International Criminal Court has been the target of several espionage attempts.

In April 2022, a Russian citizen with various identities tried to enter the ISS as an intern. The Dutch special services exposed him and refused him entry to the territory of the Netherlands. Exiled to Brazil, he was arrested there for fraud and sentenced in July to 15 years in prison.

In March, a 37-year-old man named Serhii Cherkasov was also charged with espionage in the US, where he is accused of living under a false name for two years.

According to the statement of the federal prosecutor in Washington, Serhii Cherkasov “worked as an illegal agent of the Russian special services under the Brazilian name Victor Mueller Ferreira.”

The International Criminal Court is investigating allegations of war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.

In March, she issued an arrest warrant for Vladimir Putin, accusing the Russian president of war crimes for the “illegal deportation” of thousands of Ukrainian children during the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. Moscow rejects these accusations.

In response, Russia announced in August that it had added ICC prosecutor Karim Khan to Russia’s sanctions list.
