Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the far-right American group Proud Boys, was sentenced on Tuesday to 22 years in prison, the largest sentence handed down for the attack on the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, AFP reports.

Unlike the other defendants sentenced at the same time as him in May, Enrique Tarrio, against whom prosecutors sought 33 years in prison, was not in Washington that fateful day.

But Judge Timothy Kelly found that “Mr. Tarrio was the principal leader of the conspiracy” to prevent the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory over Republican incumbent Donald Trump.

So far, the largest sentence was handed down to Ethan Nordin, one of the leaders of the far-right group “Proud Boys”, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Friday.

A day earlier on Thursday, Judge Kelly ordered two other former Proud Boys leaders, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl, to serve 17 and 15 years in prison, respectively.

Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol after a speech in which the Republican falsely claimed that his defeat in the November 2020 election was the result of widespread fraud. Five people, including a policeman, were killed during or shortly after the riots, and more than 140 policemen were injured. Millions of dollars in damage were done to the Capitol.

More than 1,100 people have been arrested on charges of storming the Capitol. Of these, more than 630 pleaded guilty and at least 110 were convicted in trials.
