The Venice Court of Appeal rejected the request of the Romanian justice to extradite the fake surgeon Matteo Politi, who was finally sentenced in March by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to three years and ten months in prison for fraud and forgery of documents, the newspaper reports. press from Italy.

An Italian court decided on August 30 that a fake cosmetic surgeon will have to serve a sentence for fraud and forgery in Italy, most likely in prison, writes Corriere del Veneto, News.ro reports.

Arrested on August 22 in Margherita, where he returned to live last December, Politi was released two days later under judicial supervision before an appeal deadline.

His lawyer, Giovanni Catanzaro, asked for the extradition to be stopped and at the same time for him to serve his sentence from Romania in Italy, but with alternative sentences to prison. The court granted the request to refuse extradition, but rejected the request for alternative punishment, and the police have five days to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.

In his statement, the lawyer insisted that the fake surgeon would have been discriminated against in Romania’s opaque system. Politi said he was the victim of a “scam” and a “conspiracy.”

However, the court decided that the sentence imposed by Bucharest did not contain any violations and did correspond to the crime of which he was accused.

“We will think whether we will appeal the decision of the appeals court,” said lawyer Giovanni Catanzaro.

On March 15, the Court of Appeal of Bucharest finally sentenced Matteo Polita to three years and ten months in prison.

He was accused of operating on 28 people, although he did not have the right to practice medicine

Matteo Politi was arraigned in January 2020 by prosecutors in the 1st District Court’s Office of the Attorney General for fraud and malpractice, accused of malpractice and misleading several people he operated on.

According to the prosecutor’s office, from March to December 2018, the fake doctor operated on 19 patients at the clinic where he worked in Bucharest.

During the same period, the man misled nine people about his quality as a specialist in plastic surgery, whom he operated on and received 13,880 lei and 10,150 euros in return.

In September 2018, Polity deceived two more people, namely two doctors, to whom he told that he would soon become the owner of the clinic, although he knew that this could not happen. The Italian convinced two doctors to conclude a contract for the provision of services with the company of which he was the head, collecting the sum of 13,896 lei. The money represented the rent for three months of use of the office in this clinic.

Moreover, in March 2018, the Italian discovered three officials of the Bucharest Health Authority (DSP) who forged several documents, falsely certifying that the Italian was qualified as a doctor and entitled to practice this profession in Romania, issuing him initial codes based on incomplete files.

The accusations don’t end there, as prosecutors found that Politi also induced officials from the Ministry of Education to recognize his bachelor’s degree, which he earned at the University of Pristina, even though the document was forged.

Matteo Polita: I used a lawyer to get the right to practice

In February 2019, Politi said that he paid a lawyer to obtain the right to practice in our country, and she told him that all the documents were in order.

• “When I came to Romania, because I don’t know how the system works in your country, I used, as everyone uses, a lawyer, to whom I gave all the necessary documents, all the documents that she, as a lawyer, he asked for them from me.

• I also signed what is called a power of attorney in Romanian. So she had all my documents, she took care of everything she had to do. In the end, she said that I have the right to practice in Romania. (…)

• The moment I am recognized, with the help of a lawyer, I can call myself a doctor. If some educational institution gave me this right… my diplomas would be recognized, equaled,” Politi said on the TV show.

The Italian refused to give the full name of the lawyer, giving only the name “Laura”. Matteo Politi then also refused to answer the question of whether he is still in Romania or not: “I am not running away, but I prefer not to tell you where I am.”
