As the war between Russia and Ukraine progresses and the rest of the world waits – especially Eastern European countries – Belarus, one of Moscow’s allies, has denounced two Latvian soldiers as having “violated” its border. In particular, the checkpoint “Gryhorivska”, as the department explained in its Telegram channel. Minsk claims that the moment of the “illegal crossing” was recorded by surveillance cameras.

“Armed security forces entered two meters towards Belarus, passed along the border, and then returned to Latvia,” the state agency said in a statement. In addition, although Minsk claims that these are two Latvian soldiers, it is true that this has not been confirmed precisely, since it is about “two foreigners dressed in military uniform”.

During this month, the tension between Latvia and Belarus increased significantly. On August 7, Riga condemned that the Belarusian authorities facilitated the illegal entry of several migrants into its territory, thereby breaking down some of the fences that separate the two countries.

However, the Latvian authorities detained the migrants and returned them to Belarus, as stipulated by the government in Riga in an emergency resolution of August 2021 to resolve the migration crisis.

“The presence in the border area of Latvia of military personnel of various law enforcement agencies, who do not know the features of the border, ethics and culture, contributes to the maintenance of tension and the emergence of similar situations,” the agency noted. , adding that Riga was informed about the event and that this situation “does not contribute to the de-escalation of the situation between the two countries.”
