
A University of South Carolina student was fatally shot Saturday morning after trying to break into the wrong house on the street he lived on, the Columbia Police Department said. say CNN.
Nicholas Anthony Donofrio, 20, of Connecticut, was killed, police said in a news release, and the university confirmed that Donofrio was a student.
Police initially responded to the break-in and sent a report around 2 a.m. Saturday, the release said. The incident escalated into a call about shots fired when police were on their way to the address.
Officers found Donofrio dead in the driveway of the home, shot in the upper body, police said.
“Preliminary information indicates that Donofrio, who lived on South Holly Street, was attempting to enter the wrong home when he was fatally shot,” the report said.
