DSU chairman Raed Arafat said there are still tankers leaking LPG in Krevedia and the fire department is monitoring the process. While he said it’s risky until all the gas runs out, “the risk is minimal.”

  • “Crevedia still has tanks that have very small leaks. Small leaks are controlled by firefighters until they are contained. It is very difficult to intervene in them. It’s risky. Then the situation needs to be drained and completed.
  • I understand this is the one that had the big leak, but there are others out there. The explosion could have been much stronger if other tanks had also exploded, so the cooling operation during the fire was extremely important, especially since you cannot extinguish this fire,” Arafat told Digi24.

According to him, firefighters are “monitoring the leak”, and the process may last two days.

  • “The estimate I heard yesterday from a fellow firefighter is that it could take two days. We’ll see if that’s the case or if it lasts longer. The territory there is controlled, there is no traffic. At this time, there is no great risk. The risk is minimal. Firefighters, if they sense something, will lead to the application of evacuation measures and restrictions to a greater distance,” Arafat said.

It will be recalled that on Saturday two devastating explosions thundered in Krevedia, as a result of which two people died: one soon after from a heart attack, and the second on Sunday in the hospital. We are talking about the wife of the first victim, who has burns on 95% of her body. 56 people were injured, including 39 firefighters, two policemen and two gendarmes.

At the time of the explosions, the liquefied gas warehouse in Krevedia, which had been operating illegally and had been listed as closed since the fall of 2020, had three liquefied gas tanks, two of which were standing outside. During the pumping of gas from one tank to another, in the yard of the enterprise, a fire broke out under one of the tanks. Most likely, it was a cigarette.

The devastating explosions in Krevedia left two dead and 56 injured and revealed a whole series of violations, and the gas station, which belonged to the son of the PSD mayor Caracal, was closed only on paper.

The liquefied gas station in Krevedia, where the catastrophic explosions occurred, was fined several times by the Emergency Situations Inspectorate and closed since September 2020, but nevertheless continued to operate, and the investigation by the prosecutor’s office also aims to establish the role of the institutions that would have carry out inspections and ensure that the depot does not continue to operate. One of the institutions that should have known that the liquefied gas warehouse was still operating was the Romanian police. On Monday, the institution reported that “no messages, petitions, information or hearings from citizens or other institutions” related to the activities carried out there have been registered.

Three criminal cases were opened

Three criminal cases have been opened for the explosions in Krevedia.

The Prosecutor General’s Office opened proceedings on the fact of intentional destruction, which caused the disaster, but depending on the investigation, the qualification of the act may be changed.

“The criminal investigation initiated at the level of the prosecutor’s office under the direction of the ÎCCJ prosecutes the crime of intentional destruction causing a disaster, under a disaster within the meaning of the Criminal Code, including a situation where such an event results in the death or bodily injury of two or more persons,” – said the Prosecutor General.

The DNA has opened criminal proceedings – it is investigating possible acts of corruption by officials who perform control duties. As sources in the court informed HotNews.ro, the case was opened on the fact of abuse of official position.

The Military Prosecutor’s Office of Bucharest reported itself and opened a criminal case in the case of firemen’s intervention at the LPG warehouse.

Control at all gas cylinder stations

Prime Minister Marcel Čolaku announced that from Monday, inspections will begin at all gas stations in the country.

“What can I tell you, starting tomorrow, all gas stations throughout the country will enter the control system. In addition, if elements and violations are found that will lead to human lives or pose a threat to people, the activity will be closed on the spot,” said Marcel Colaku on Sunday after visiting the site of the explosions in Crevedia.

The Prime Minister announced that, if necessary, changes will be made to the legislation.

“If necessary, we will make legislative changes over the next week so that these things happen without lawsuits and without certain people trying to keep their businesses going if they are illegal,” Cholaku said.
