
Belgian cyclist Thiel De Decker, winner of the Paris-Roubaix youth race in the spring, died on Friday at the age of 22, two days after a training accident, his Lotto-Dstny team announced.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Teil De Dekker following an accident during training on Wednesday. The team is heartbroken by this news and sends their love and thoughts to Tyle’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the team wrote on social media.
De Decker crashed violently into the back of a car during practice.
He was taken to a hospital in Lier (Antwerp) where he underwent surgery before being transferred to the University Hospital of Antwerp. He was put into an artificial coma.
A stage winner of the Tour of Taiwan earlier this year and the Tour of Alsace in July, the young Belgian made a name for himself by winning Paris-Roubaix in the U23 category. In early July, he signed a professional contract with Lotto-Dstny, News.ro reports.
