A part of the historic Berlin Wall, demolished on November 9, 1989 in Germany, was installed on Saturday in the Binational Park of Friendship in the border city of Tijuana by the municipal authorities and former Mexican Foreign Minister and presidential candidate Marcelo Ebrard, reports EFE. Agerpres.
The Berlin Wall became a symbol of unity
The monument called “World Without Walls” is now a symbol of unity and hope on the border between Mexico and the United States, and its installation was made possible by the association “Mexicanos Construyendo”, whose management managed to get the fragment moved to its new home in Tijuana.
Rodrigo Aguilar, a representative of the association, told EFE that this is an important message for humanity without material, physical or mental walls “that limit us as humanity”.
“We want to send a message to Mexico and the United States that we need to look for bridges, not walls,” he said.
Donald Trump abandoned the code
The approximately four-ton segment was donated by Marcos Klein Marquez, who works with the German non-profit organization Die Offene Gesellschaft, and who told the media that the piece carries a story of resilience and deep meaning.
“On the 30th anniversary of his fall in Germany, I tried to give it to the then US President Donald Trump (2017-2021), but he refused even after almost four years of traveling to exhibitions through neighboring countries. country, finally arrived in Tijuana,” he said.
For Márquez, the city of Tijuana turned out to be the best place for this segment of the original wall, which for 28 years divided Germany and resulted in the deaths of many people who tried to cross it.
The segment of the wall was unveiled at a ceremony presided over by Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero, who noted that “almost 34 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall in Germany, we are reminded that there is no such thing as a wall that will not fall by the force of freedom and peace that exists between people”.
The segment of the Berlin Wall was located in Playas, the westernmost district of the municipality of Tijuana (Baja California), a few steps from the US border wall that reaches the Pacific Ocean and where the US government is currently continuing to replace parts of the border fence on the Friendship Park side.
At the bottom of a fragment of the Berlin Wall, a small plaque was opened with the message: “Let this be a lesson for building a society that destroys walls and builds bridges of solidarity and understanding, always striving for the common good, social justice, freedom and brotherhood.”
Marcelo Ebrard, who was instrumental in bringing the monumental segment to the city during his tenure as Mexico’s foreign minister, stressed that it was a reminder that “a battle is needed.”
That “to make sure that we don’t have this wall between Mexico and the United States, because actually, in the medium term, we’re more and more economically integrated and we’re a family, so it’s a very powerful symbol,” he said. .
In addition, Ebrard, the Mexican presidential candidate of the National Revival Movement (pro-Morena), noted that the US elections are coming up, so as a political propaganda, the candidates will talk about the border wall to try to win over supporters.
“I know the wall is going to be a (presidential) campaign issue in the United States, so we put out the message ‘The wall will come down,'” he concluded.
