Britain on Sunday warned its citizens traveling to Sweden of possible terror attacks after the burning of copies of the Koran by anti-Islam activists sparked outrage across the Muslim world and the US government issued a travel warning about the danger, Reuters reported.
In an updated travel advisory, the British Foreign Office says that Swedish authorities have already prevented planned attacks and made arrests. “It is very likely that terrorists will try to carry out attacks in Sweden,” the likely targets will be places visited by foreign citizens, the British Foreign Office said in a statement.
Acknowledging this risk, Sweden’s national security adviser, Henrik Landerholm, reiterated that threats to Sweden have increased since the recent burning of the Koran. The same official also noted that the attack by Iraqi demonstrators on the Swedish embassy in Baghdad on July 19, the Molotov cocktail attack on the Swedish embassy in Lebanon on August 9, and the shooting of an employee of the Swedish consulate in Turkey confirm the increase in the number of these threats.
The government in Stockholm announced on August 1st that it would strengthen internal and border controls, giving police more powers to stop and search people.
This summer, Denmark and Sweden saw a series of demonstrations in which copies of the Koran were burned or destroyed right in front of the embassies of some Arab countries, prompting protests from Muslim countries who asked governments in Copenhagen and Stockholm not to tolerate any more such displays, but they continued.
