Franco-Czech writer Milan Kundera, who died on July 11 at the age of 94, was cremated in strict secrecy, the Gallimard publishing house announced on Wednesday.

The author of the novel “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”, who led a very restrained lifestyle, did not want his funeral, the France-Presse and Agerpres agencies write.

“Milan Kundera was cremated today” at an undisclosed location, and “the ceremony took place in strict secrecy,” publishing director Antoine Gallimard said in a statement.

“Janáček’s sonata performed on the piano by Ludwik Kundera, Milan’s father, accompanied him on this last journey,” added Gallimar.

This piece by the Czech composer Leoš Janáček was recorded by the novelist’s father, a famous pianist who died in 1971.

Milan Kundera, born in Brno in 1929 and exiled to France in 1975, was one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. His novels analyze the human condition, the evolution of identity, the meaning of freedom, the perils of existence or the possibility of love.
