Russian scientists say strong solar flare activity is forecast for Monday, which could interfere with shortwave communications, after three solar flares were spotted a day ago.
The Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics in Moscow has announced that X-class eruptions, including proton bursts, are possible and are expected to affect shortwave radio transmissions.
X-class flares are the largest explosions in solar systems and can create long-lasting radiation storms. Proton flares are a storm of energetic solar particles consisting mainly of protons.
Solar flares occur when the strong magnetic fields in and around the Sun are restored. According to NASA, they can affect Earth’s magnetic field, potentially damaging satellites and communications equipment.
In 2022, a geomagnetic storm triggered by intense radiation from the sun knocked out 40 newly launched SpaceX satellites, according to Reuters.
According to the Fedorov Institute of Applied Geophysics, three flares were observed on the Sun on Sunday, one of which lasted 14 minutes and led to a radio communication failure, Reuters also writes.
