Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sunday that leaders of the US-led NATO alliance should discuss Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant at a summit starting next week in Vilnius, Reuters reported.
NATO leaders will gather in Vilnius on July 11-12 to discuss a wide range of topics, from disagreements over Ukraine’s candidacy and Sweden’s accession to increased ammunition stockpiles and a review of the first defense plans in a decade.
Accusing Ukraine of “systematic damage” to the Zaporizhzhia NPP, Zakharova said that “the attention of the NATO summit should be focused on this.”
“After all, most of the members of the alliance will be in the zone of direct damage” (if something happens at the plant), Zakharova said in her Telegram channel.
Vilnius is about 1,000 kilometers from Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
Russia and Ukraine blame each other for the terrorist attack in Zaporizhzhia
Both Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of planning an attack on the plant, which is located in Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region, near the front line of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi has been warning for several days about a serious threat from the facility, recently saying that Russian troops have mined the roofs of several reactors.
International Atomic Energy Agency experts at the plant said they had not yet seen any signs of mines or explosives at the plant, but they needed more access to be sure.
