At least 48 people were killed in a road accident in Londiana, western Kenya, on Friday night when a container truck veered off the road and crashed into several vehicles, Reuters reported.

Images of the accident, broadcast by local television, showed the mangled wreckage of cars and motorcycles, as well as damaged minibuses and trucks.

Regional Police Commander Tom Odera reported that as of Friday evening, the death toll was 48.

“I saw a truck driving at speed. I jerked the steering wheel and narrowly avoided hitting him head-on. The person behind me thought I wanted to stop to buy something. He overtook me and then he was hit. The truck left the road and crashed into other vehicles,” said the driver, Peter Otieno.

“I saw about 20 bodies with my own eyes. There were other bodies under the car,” he added.

The Kenya Red Cross said the truck crashed into more than six cars and rammed pedestrians. More than 20 victims were taken to local hospitals, the Red Cross reported.

“The country is in mourning with the families who lost loved ones in the horrific road accident in London,” Kenyan President William Ruto wrote on Twitter.

“It is very painful that among the victims were young people with a promising future and businessmen who were going about their daily business.”

The crash is one of the deadliest on Kenyan roads in recent years. Last year, 34 people died in central Kenya when the bus they were traveling in flew off a bridge and plunged into a river.
