It all started after John Tory, the former mayor of Toronto, resigned after eight years after a February article in the Toronto Star revealed that the 68-year-old and married mayor had an extramarital affair with a 31-year-old City Hall employee. during the Covid-19 pandemic. He resigned a few days after the publication of the article, writes the BBC.

But that was only the last straw.

The Tories have been criticized for lacking a vision for Toronto and deepening social inequality in one of the world’s most affordable cities. Many pointed to the fact that gun violence, housing prices and violence on public transportation have increased under his terms, as well as the fact that homelessness has increased.

Despite this criticism, the Tories have been elected three times, most recently in October 2022, when few people dared to stand against him.

Tory, who became mayor for the first time in 2014 after his predecessor Rob Ford, made headlines for smoking cocaine.

More than 100 people and a dog are running for mayor of Toronto

On June 26, Toronto Canadians go to vote for another mayor. This time there is no shortage of candidates in the Canadian city. The ballot will feature the names of 101 people and one dog, Molly.

The dog, who is a six-year-old wolf-husky mix, and her human friend Toby Heaps are taking part in the Stop Salt Attack campaign on the city’s roads this winter.

Heaps argued that excessive use of road salt in the winter can injure dogs’ paws like Molly’s. His campaign also proposes to address housing unaffordability, raise taxes on billion-dollar companies and ban fossil fuel heating systems in new homes and commercial buildings.

Toby said that if he won, he would make Molly the town’s first honorary mayor.

With so much competition, Mr. Heaps — Molly’s owner — said he realizes he may not be Toronto’s next mayor. His decision to run, he said, was born out of a conversation with his seven-year-old son.

“I said, ‘OK, you know there’s a good chance we’re not going to win.’ How would you feel then?” – said Hips.

“He said, ‘I’d be mad, I’d be sad, but I’d be glad you tried.’
