Some politicians marry or remarry during periods when they already held public positions in the Romanian state, so they are required to include in their property declarations the value of a gift received during a wedding or baptism of children, regardless of whether the gift was in money or in kind. In many cases, the money given at the weddings of politicians amounts to considerable sums.

Recently, AUR leader George Simion’s latest property declaration, in which the sum of €400,000 was listed as a wedding gift, caused a stir. Simion later said he was left with only a small fraction of the sum after covering all the expenses associated with an event of this magnitude, which was attended by about 10,000 people. Donations such as the cheese sent by Gigi Becali to serve to the newlyweds will also be included in the €400.00 amount.
