PSD President Marcel Čolaku said that the Social Democrats want to continue cooperation with the UDMR and will propose that Union representatives take over the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of European Funds in the next government.
“There was a discussion regarding the continuation of cooperation with UDMR. My colleagues fully agree to continue this cooperation and he also made a proposal that I will go to the meeting, which I think today, together with Mr. Prime Minister Nicolae Chuke and Mr. President Kelemen Hunor, that the UDMR take over The Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of European Funds are two very important ministries. As far as we know, they also have the right people to lead these ministries (…) It’s not necessarily the approach to the ministries, but depending on the most suitable people,” Çolaku said after a meeting with PSD leaders in Vila Lac, according to Agerpres.
Asked if this meant that the protocol signed in 2021 between the PSD and the PNL would no longer be respected, Çolaku said: “The political agreement is to create a parliamentary majority, not to divide certain things. We have a political agreement in which we created a majority.(…) The context a year and a half ago was one, the context is different now, and we are trying to depend as much as possible on the people who are most suitable to lead certain ministries.”
However, Cholaku did not say who will retain the ministries of development and environment, which have been in the UDMR until now.
According to information obtained on Friday by HotNews.ro, the UDMR wanted to remain in the government and would be ready to review the portfolios, except for the Ministry of Development.
In other words, the UDMR may give in to the Ministry of Natural Resources if negotiations resume.
According to HotNews.ro sources, Iohannis has asked Marcel Čolaka and Nicolae Chuke to clarify the situation in the government from a political point of view and to make a tentative decision on governance.
“They were offered two options: either the ring road is implemented so that the SDP heads the executive power and the ministries are exchanged, or they continue with the same prime minister and change the ministers for certain portfolios. Be that as it may, Iohannis asked them to give an answer and implement the decision in a maximum of two weeks, before the end of the parliamentary session,” the cited sources said.
It will be recalled that the negotiations reached an impasse after the PSD and PNL asked the leaders of the UDMR to abandon the Ministry of Environment.
In order to preserve the transport portfolio, the Social Democrats suggested that the Liberals take away the Ministry of Natural Resources from the UDMR. This proposal was supported by the PNL, and after the refusal of the UDMR leaders, the negotiations were blocked.
The big bet for both PSD and PNL is to get ministries that will announce the completion of some projects, manage public funds and organize elections. In this sense, Cholaku and Chuke under Klaus Iohannis claimed key ministries, while the UDMR risks accepting less important ministries or abandoning the government.
