Karditsa is full of crows – Why scientists are trying to limit them

Recently, namely since the beginning of March, there has been a continuous increase in the settlement of thickets and individual trees in the urban and suburban structure of the city of Almaty. Karditsa With coracoidmostly havaroni (Corvus frugilegus).

Especially in the Pausilipo Grove, covering several tens of acres, more than 300 active hawk nests were recorded in a recent census conducted by the staff of the Wildlife Management Laboratory of the Department of Forestry, Forestry and Planning (DEXYS) of the University of Thessaly.

As Dr. Periklis K. Bircas, professor of wildlife biology in Karditsa and neighboring areas, told the Athens Macedonian News Agency, more than 700 havaroni create problems (nuisance, faecal deposits, pollution, etc.) and “threaten” the health and safety of the population.

In particular, according to him, havaronia is a species of corvids that used to nest in Greece. until 1960sand since the 2000s, they have been reinvested with increasing and expanding trends.

In an effort to reflect the current situation, a number of actions have been taken by the DEXYS Department and the Wildlife Management Laboratory since June 2022. Meetings were held with representatives of the municipality of Karditsa, officials of the Karditsa forestry, teachers, representatives of organizations and entrepreneurs. Collected data on reproductive population species of cormorants in Karditsa and nesting features of cormorants in Pausilipo. Data were also collected on the attitudes of Karditsa residents towards breeding crustacean species and the proposed management measures were evaluated as part of the preparation of two master’s theses.

Then a working meeting was held between the Mayor of Karditsa, businessmen and the Director of the Environmental Management Laboratory of the Department. LAW, Prof. Pericles Birtz, which led to the decision of the municipal council to entrust the preparation and submission of a proposal to a group of scientists from the Wildlife Management Laboratory, for implementation management measures to prevent or limit consequences, due to the increased presence of corvids among residents of Karditsa municipality and their domestic animals. At the same time, the Muzaki Center for Environmental Education and OIKOSFAIRA organized an Evening on the theme: “The impact of coracoids on the urban environment – the case of Pausilipou Park in Karditsa”.

Impact on public health

As Mr. Bircas describes in APE-MBE, vote corvids make it unbearable to stay in the Pausilipo park and in the neighboring territories. OUR accumulation of, in fact, a large amount of feces and the frequent discovery of dead crustaceans in areas where children and pets are active pose a risk of pathogen transmission and disease outbreaks.

Through incubation of eggs and development of coracoid chicks, he explains, juveniles stranded on the ground as a result of falling out of nestscausing their parents to try to protect them and attack civilians who accidentally approach them.

OUR appearance of mosquitoes and the coexistence of coracoids in urban tissue poses a risk of incidents West Nile virus infections. The professor emphasizes that “at this point in time and as long as the reproductive process of coracoids develops, there is no way to develop a comprehensive management program coracidae and prevention of impact, however, it is considered necessary to take immediate action to combat the effects that are expected to be caused by overpopulation of coracidae species in the Karditsa urban area.”

Significantly, he mentions the implementation of measures to expel the beak-shaped from “Pausilipo” by methods sacrilege (use of trained predators), use of sources of clicks and voices of birds of prey, use of laser devices, use of predator models, setting traps to capture and remove corvids, etc.
