In a statement, the 46-year-old defendant — who served at Macedonia Airport — allegedly claimed he was hit by a Syrian, a member of a migrant smuggling gang, in order to find a police officer to cooperate with the ring. According to what he apologized for, he reportedly accepted the offer at first, but later regretted it, and when he refused, it was already too late.

Regarding the dozens of winning tickets found in his possession (more than 70,000 euros), he apologized for being old, and for his previous involvement in a similar case after a complaint – reportedly – said that no charges were ever brought against him. .

His allegations did not convince the investigator and the prosecutor, who unanimously decided on his temporary detention.

Earlier, 33-year-old Siros, who was arrested in the same case and accused of misdemeanors, apologized to the same investigator (a case was allocated for a minor). He allegedly claimed to have paid 8,000 euros for him and his underage sister to cross the Evros River to Greece. It appears that the brothers were first sent to Athens and then transferred to Thessaloniki, where they were arrested before boarding the plane that was supposed to take them to their destination.
