On Tuesday, American justice is considering an appeal by a conservative association that wants to know more about the visa granted to Prince Harry, despite the fact that he admitted that he used drugs in the United States, writes AFP.
Far from the London court where the Duke of Sussex has just testified against the media’s “hostility” towards him, a federal judge in Washington will devote a hearing to a more technical claim brought by the Heritage Foundation.
Under Freedom of Information laws, the foundation is requesting the immigration documents of the prince, who split from the British royal family and settled in California with his American wife, Meghan Markle.
The youngest son of King Charles III “publicly confessed (…) to a series of drug-related crimes in the United States and abroad. American law usually prohibits such persons from entering the country, said the appeal of this foundation, which is very influential in conservative legal circles.
It is based, in particular, on Prince Harry’s memoir, published in January, in which he admitted to using cannabis, psychotropic substances and cocaine in the UK, Lesotho and the US.
In 2002, “in someone’s country house during a hunting weekend, I was offered a linva, and since then I have taken several more,” he writes, in particular, in “Le SupplĂ©ant”, where he also says that he “swallowed” hallucinogenic mushrooms on party in Los Angeles in 2016.
“Psychedelic drugs also benefited me. For several years I took them for fun (…) and then for therapeutic, medical purposes,” he adds, describing himself as an “unfortunate” young man ready to try anything to “change the status quo.”
The Heritage Foundation recalls that other celebrities, including soccer player Maradona and singer Amy Winehouse, have also been denied entry to the US due to drug use.
In particular, she wants access to the form that must be filled out to enter the US, in which each applicant must say whether they have ever used drugs.
While acknowledging that the documents “may be of some public interest,” the federal government denied it “currently has sufficient information to assess whether other interests outweigh” and said there was no urgent need to release the folder.
