Pope Francis did not receive anyone for an audience on Friday because he has a fever, the Vatican announced on Friday. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni did not provide other details about the state of health of the 86-year-old Roman Catholic head, Reuters reports.
“Because of the fever, Pope Francis did not receive (anyone) in audience this morning,” Bruni said in response to a reporter’s question about why no one was included in his daily schedule for the day.
Francis spent five days in a Rome hospital with bronchitis in late March, but quickly recovered from an antibiotic infusion and returned to his duties, including a three-day trip to Hungary in late April.
He looked tired at a meeting with students outside the Vatican on Thursday afternoon.
Francis, who became Pope 10 years ago, lost part of a lung in his youth in his native Argentina.
Since taking office as pope, he has had to cancel events, sometimes at the last minute, due to fever.
He was hospitalized for the first time since becoming pope in 2021 for surgery to remove part of his colon.
None of the events planned by the Pope have been canceled. He will preside over the Pentecost Mass in St. Peter’s Square and will receive Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Monday.
It is not known if he will hold a private hearing on Saturday.
Earlier this week, the Vatican announced that the Pope will visit Portugal on August 2-6 to participate in World Youth Day and visit the Fatima shrine.
