India: First two cheetahs born in the country in more than 70 years have died

Two cheetah cubs were born to a mother who was transferred last year to India from Africa died in Kuno National Park last week as heatwaves in the region sent temperatures soaring.

“She was weak, underweight and extremely dehydrated. The Chatterers died on Thursday despite measures taken to save them,” park authorities said. “The last cub is in critical condition and is being treated,” authorities said.

On September 17, 2022, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi watched the arrival of big cats, the fastest animal on Earth. This was the culmination of 13 years of work to restore a species that disappeared from India about 70 years ago.

This was the first time that wild cheetahs had been transported to another continent for release. This has raised questions from scientists who say the government should do more to protect the country’s endangered wildlife. Later, in February 2023, twelve more cheetahs from South Africa joined.

Last year, the country joined the UN commitment (30 by 30) to protect climate and biodiversity on 30% of land and ocean by 2030. Today, however, less than 6% of its territory is protected.
