As Reuters reports, on Thursday the car crashed into the gates of Downing Street, the building that houses the office and residence of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. According to the police, the driver of the vehicle was detained.
βAt around 4.20pm, a car crashed into the Downing Street Gate in Whitehall. Armed officers detained a man at the scene on suspicion of committing a crime and dangerous driving,” the police said in a statement, adding that no one was injured.
A witness told Reuters he saw a car in front of the Downing Street gates with its doors and boot open, while police closed off Whitehall Boulevard, with restrictions lifted in the meantime.
Also, according to eyewitnesses, the driver was a white man in his 50s.
Police later said the incident was not being investigated as a terrorist attack.
