Russia said on Thursday it had dispatched fighter jets to prevent two US strategic bombers from “violating the state border” over the Baltic Sea, Moscow said for the second time this week, AFP reported.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had airborne Su-27 and Su-35 fighter jets and identified “the aerial targets as two US Air Force B-1B strategic bombers.”
Twice in one week
The incident came after two more US bombers were detected on Tuesday approaching Russia’s border over the Baltic Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
According to Russian officials, the planes were described as “US Air Force strategic bombers” and did not cross the border.
“The crew of the Russian fighter classified the aerial targets as two US Air Force B-1B strategic bombers…” he said.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the operation was carried out “in strict accordance with international rules for the use of air space.”
