Japanese writer Haruki Murakami has been awarded the Princess of Asturias Literary Prize, one of the most prestigious in the Spanish-speaking world, for his work that moves between “real and dreamy”.

The Foundation said in a statement that the 74-year-old author has succeeded in reconciling Japanese traditions and Western cultural heritage with an ambitious and innovative discourse.

Combining everyday life in contemporary Japan with pop culture references, his work touches on the most serious social issues with a touch of intimacy and humor, according to an announcement from the foundation that awards what is considered the Spanish Nobel Prize in Literature.

Haruki Murakami was born in Kyoto in 1949. Wrote novels and essays that have been translated into fifty languages. Among them are “The Tuned Bird”, (1994), “Kafka on the Shore”, (2002), “1Q84”, (2009).

His novel Drive My Car is based on Drive My Car, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2022.
