The Cabinet has reported former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the police over fresh allegations that he broke isolation rules during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Times newspaper reported on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The Times writes that the Department, which is responsible for overseeing the functioning of the government, made referrals to two regional police offices based on information revealed during the preparation of a series of observations for a public inquiry into the pandemic.

According to ministerial records, Boris Johnson’s friends went to Chequers, a country house provided to sitting prime ministers, during the pandemic.

Reuters could not immediately reach a spokesman for Johnson for comment.

The Times article also quoted Johnson’s team as calling the complaint “clearly a politically motivated attempt to make something out of nothing.”

Johnson was previously fined by police for taking part in his birthday celebrations at Downing Street in June 2020, making him the first prime minister to break the law while in office.

These fines contributed to his removal from the post of prime minister last year.
