MEP Dacian Ciolos says that he still wants a political future in Romania and that he will decide at the appropriate time together with his REPER colleagues whether he will run for the presidency or for the upcoming European Union elections.
When asked if he wanted a political future in Romania, as he was absent from the REPER General Assembly on Saturday due to the European Parliament’s mission in Lebanon, Dacian Ciolos answered in the affirmative, but said he had not yet decided on the position he would run for .
“I still want a political future in Romania, but it doesn’t just depend on me, it depends on those who vote,” Ciolos said, as quoted by Agerpres, during a briefing for Romanian journalists in Strasbourg.
He noted that he is not considering candidacy for local or parliamentary positions, because his experience would be more suitable for another position.
“I have not yet decided where I will run for office, I do not see a local candidacy and I do not think that I will run for the national parliament. I am interested in candidacy, I am speaking personally, where I think I could use the accumulated experience, in the presidential elections, and I do not rule out candidacy, in the future, in the European Parliament, even if it is much less likely than in 2019”, – said the MEP from the Renew group, the former leader of this political group in the European Parliament.
He said he and his colleagues would make a decision “at the appropriate time, with sufficient time before the relevant election, depending on how events develop.”
Dacian Cholos claims that this is not just what he wants, and that he will not run for office just to test his support.
“I want to apply for access to a position that will allow me to work in Romania. If I don’t feel it can happen, I’ll probably look for another way of doing things in Romania,” Ciolos said.
Asked if REPER would seek alliances in the upcoming elections, Ciolos did not want to comment on behalf of the new REPER leadership, but said he personally did not see how in 2024 “one party will be able to rule Romania, whoever it is.”
“So we have to think about alliances. But right now, of course, you’re thinking about alliances between parties going through parliament. This is where the discussions begin,” said the co-founder of REPER.
