Artist and sculptor Sofia Vari, partner of Colombian sculptor Fernando Botero, has died at the age of 83.

The prominent Greek artist passed away on Friday afternoon in a Monaco hospital after a long battle with cancer.

He was the partner of the world famous painter and sculptor Fernando Botero. According to the information, her body is expected to be taken to Paris for cremation, with the ashes “moved” to the couple’s villa in Pietrasanta in Tuscany.

Sofia Vari was born in Vari, Attica, where she got her name from a Greek father and a Hungarian mother. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

She made her first artistic steps in the field of figurative painting, but from the mid-80s she turned to sculpture. She used bronze and marble in her works, and they are usually large.

She dabbled in jewelry and collages. He came from an aristocratic family (the Kanellopulu family).

The Treaty of Varkiza was signed in the family mansion in Vari. She spent her childhood and youth in Greece, Great Britain and Switzerland, and also studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
