The Academy of Culture “Chalking Lemonia”, with the seal of the author Tanasis Triaridis, from June 8 to 11, begins a four-day tour of one of the most beautiful places on the Balkan Peninsula and Europe, Zagorochoria of Epirus. Journey beyond the mountains, as the name of the region suggests (the word Zagori comes from the Slavic prefix Za, meaning “back”, and the noun gora, meaning “mountain”). A journey to a mythical and magical place where rivers and lakes, stone, sky and mountains meet and confront man and his life in a truly unique way.

Nowhere else on the entire Balkan Peninsula was so generously presented so many geological features and natural beauties. Nowhere else did nature dominate so completely, but nowhere else did she receive man so warmly. Nowhere else in the course of history and the creation of his civilization has man shown such respect for this defining nature that surrounded him, creating his roads, villages and houses, herding his animals or cultivating his land. A real “natural” laboratory, a museum of geology, nature and culture “on the spot”.

And around these villages is the theater and the ancient oracle of Dodoni, the sacred place of Zeus and Dione, the oldest oracle found in Greece. And on the other side the plains of Konitsa and Kledonia, scenes of the battles of the Civil War, and Kalpaki, the battlefield of the Greco-Italian War. It is no coincidence that the entire Zagori region in February 2022 became the first (and only) Greek region to apply for official inscription on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as the country’s first cultural landscape.
