In February 2022, immediately after the start of the war in Ukraine, UEFA suspended Russia from all international football competitions. More than a year later, officials of the Russian Football Federation are negotiating with UEFA to lift the ban.

The Russian Football Federation is negotiating with UEFA about returning to international competitions

Year after year CSKA Moscow, Spartak Moscow, Zenit St. Petersburg and other top teams from Russia were present at the competitions organized by UEFA.

Since February 2022, this has become impossible due to the decision of the European Forum due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Even FIFA in the same period excluded the Russian national team from any European and international competitions.

Reuters is now reporting that Russian officials are in tough negotiations with UEFA to lift the ban on participation in international competitions.

“We are negotiating with UEFA about lifting the disqualification and reinstatement. Negotiations are difficult – they are long conversations that take place all the time.” – said the general secretary of the Russian Football Federation Maksym Mitrofanov.

Initially, the Russian Football Federation said it would consider changing the composition at confederation level to abandon Europe in favor of Asia.
