More than 7,000 Ukrainian soldiers are currently missing, according to a Ukrainian official quoted by Sky News.
Oleg Kotenko, the Commissioner for Missing Persons, said that this figure includes both the dead and the captured.
He noted that about 60-65% of missing persons are usually found in captivity, and the rest may no longer be alive.
“We hope that those people we are looking for as missing persons are really captured (and not dead),” Kotenko said on the air of the TV channel, quoted by the Ukrainian news channel Novy Golos.
Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion last February, Ukraine has returned 2,235 prisoners of war from Russian captivity, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
