The past few weeks have been full of news for fans star trekthe month of March starts very badly: Discoverya series that practically revived the serialized part of the franchise after a 12-year hiatus since its conclusion Star Trek: Enterprisewill end early next year with the end of Season 5.

The news went so badly that in January Paramount announced that and Star Trek: Picardthe series, which brought back Patrick Stewart as the main character, will end after season 3, which premiered on February 16, and will say goodbye to fans on the 20th of this month, when the final episode, rather poetically named The last generation (“The Last Generation”).

But then better news started rolling in: Paramount and CBS announced last week that the franchise would be enriched with a new live-action series titled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and which it says will “introduce us to a group of young cadets who have come together to achieve a shared dream of hope and optimism.” The official description also mentions “a new enemy that threatens the Academy and the Federation itself.”

Naturally, people try to sell their goods. But fans welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm, considering that while we’ve had so many TV shows and movies over the years star trek making them harder to follow anymore, the story centered around Starfleet Academy has only been explored by the franchise’s video games so far.

And a few days before the announcement of the new series, Paramount announced it Star Trek: Brave New Worldsa spin-off series inspired by Discovery which premiered last year, will receive a third season, although the second has not even been released yet. Please, considering how many similar ads I’ve had recently, I can’t even say that this is an unusual practice in Hollywood.

A little parenthesis here: Season 2 premieres on Paramount on June 15th, but SkyShowtime, the streaming platform that airs it in Romania, has so far announced that it will appear in June, so we might see it a bit later against the US.

But what seems quite certain is that Brave new worlds will now become the flagship series of the franchise star trekor at least will take up the mantle after the conclusion Discovery.

Considering that although it was launched last year, Star Trek: Brave New Worlds it wasn’t available in Romania until the 14th of February this year, with the launch of SkyShowtime here too, it might be worth explaining its history a bit.

Where is “Brave New Worlds” in the vast universe of “Star Trek”.

For decades after the series ended star trek original in 1969, each new chapter, whether a new series or a feature film, was accompanied by the question “Where is it?” in the timeline of the universe that made William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy famous to sci-fi fans around the world.

In some cases, the question had a clear answer. example, Star Trek: Deep Space Ninethe series, which aired from 1993 to 1999, begins with the famous battle between the Federation and the Borg (“Battle of the Wolf 359”), which takes place at a time when Captain Picard, played by Patrick Stewart, has already been assimilated by the Borg.

Fans asked the same question when it was announced Brave new worldsespecially since it featured brand new characters as well as some familiar ones from the original series like Spock and Niota Ugura.

However, the launch of the series last year gave a fairly clear answer to the question, the story of Brave new worlds events take place ten years before the beginning of the original series. Being a spin-off series based on Star Trek: Discovery, Brave new worlds takes place in a separate narrative thread that begins at the end of season 2 Discovery and a time jump of the eponymous ship and its crew.

Okay, maybe it doesn’t sound that clear if you haven’t seen it Discoverybut the new series is practically a prequel to the original series, its story unfolding chronologically before it.

Also, despite being a prequel to a series starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, Brave new worlds comes with a number of changes to the canon known to fans. One of the most obvious concerns T’Pring’s character and his relationship with Spock.

While T’Pring only appears in one episode of Season 2 in the original series, and his relationship with the USS Enterprise’s science officer is quite distant, they share Vulcan tradition rather than affection, Brave new worlds two are in a relationship.

But look more closely at what they say about their characters and Brave new worlds even Ethan Peck, who plays Spock, and Rebecca Romijn, the actress who plays Number One, a role that was created for the first pilot episode of the original series in 1965, but was rejected by the producers at the time.

A more human Spock in “Brave New Worlds”

Ethan, what is it like to play such a well-known and beloved character, and how do you prepare for such a role?

It’s such a privilege and such an honor, and it’s still scary. It still feels new and very surreal to me. I can’t believe I got the chance to do this. It’s like another world, like a dream that’s now part of my life, and it’s hard for me to integrate because it’s so strange and unusual.

When I was cast, I didn’t know I was auditioning for Spock, so the first part of the preparation I would say was finding out what they were seeing [producătorii] in me that lends itself to Spock’s character. It was an important introspection to understand more about myself and what it is about me as Spock and just trying to figure it out.

I spent time watching Leonard Nimoy and his performance on the original series, and the writers did a great job of writing that character for me, so a lot of that work is their credit, and I try to come in as prepared as possible and bring out the best of me.

How does your “Spock” differ from the “classic”, will it surprise fans?

I think it’s me, Leonard Nimoy, and Zach Quinto (who played Spock in 3 movies star trek released between 2009 and 2016) we are so different as individuals and I think what separates me from them is the nuances we see in the characters.

I think maybe my version of Spock has more humor and a real curiosity about his human side. He’s always been that way, but I think we’re really learning that Brave new worlds.

The number one Star Trek hero brought back to life after 6 decades

Rebecca, what do you like most about your character, Number One, and what do you hope fans will like most about him?

My character reappeared in the original pilot episode of the original series [căpitanul Cristohper] Pike and Number One were cut, I guess they thought the test audience and the directors couldn’t imagine that a woman could be sane and intelligent enough to be a first officer.

She was then played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry and is said to be the longest time between the character’s introduction and her transition to the series, 60 years before we finally see the character in development now.

fans star trek people are going to be familiar with my character, and being able to flesh him out, make him a complex character was fantastic for me. And Number One has a secret that she’s been hiding, something shameful because it’s a secret that Starfleet won’t allow, but I think she loves Starfleet more than anyone else. She is very ashamed because she breaks the rules to become part of the fleet.

Do you follow many of Star Trek’s iconic female characters, are you inspired by them, or do you like some more than others?

There were many female characters star trek to inspire you i would like to mention uhura first because i think so [actrița] Nichelle Nichols broke down so many barriers and created an amazing cast of characters for the entire franchise star trek.

And I’m so proud of Celia (Rose Gooding, who plays Uhura in Brave new worlds), I wish Nichelle could have seen her interpretation of Uhura in her younger days (no Nichols died last July). She does a fantastic job and I think Celia is the one I’m most excited about in terms of strong female characters in the franchise.

Question for both of you: What is the best thing about Star Trek?

Ethan Peck: There’s so much to love, working with people like Rebecca is so much fun, and being on the spaceship set is indescribable. And the fans are an incredible part of this whole experience.

Rebecca Romijn: And we hear them, this is a franchise that relies heavily on the fans, even more than the franchise X-Menmaybe just fans star Wars to compare And we don’t care what the fans have to say, their thoughts, ideas and criticism. I would say the fans, our cast and the sets are the best parts.
