President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to get Ukraine invited to join the North Atlantic Alliance at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July, stressing in his speech on Saturday evening that without Ukraine, NATO cannot protect Europe.
“It’s nice to end this week with good results for the state – in terms of weapons, international support, expanding our ties with the world and our movement towards NATO,” Zelenskyy said in his address to his compatriots on Saturday evening, in which he summarized the most important diplomatic actions, News.ro notes.
“A very important decision was made in Lithuania this week regarding the main expectations from the NATO summit planned in Vilnius,” said Zelenskyi, who was invited to the summit in Lithuania, where Kyiv hopes to receive firm security guarantees. However, according to the international press, the allies are currently divided on this issue, and the US opposes the “road map”, which would be a kind of anteroom for Ukraine.
- Why does the US oppose a clear timetable for Ukraine’s accession to NATO
“The Sejm (Parliament) of Lithuania recognized the need to invite Ukraine to NATO membership – to invite this year to the summit in Vilnius,” Zelenskyi emphasized in this context. “I thank the Lithuanian people and all Lithuanian politicians for understanding the current security situation in Europe. Only together with Ukraine will the Alliance guarantee real protection of Europe against any interference in the lives of peoples – in the existing borders and in the international order based on rules. But it is difficult to imagine the government without Ukraine,” Zelenskyi said.
He noted that Kyiv’s goal coincides with this decision of the Lithuanian Diet and he will work to achieve this goal in the coming weeks.
“The most important thing is a visit to Poland”
But Zelenskyi said the most important event this week was his first official visit to neighboring Poland since the start of the war, and emphasized Warsaw’s overwhelming support. Zelensky announced that all the tanks sent by Poland, including the Leopard, are already in Ukraine, and new arrangements have been made to send 200 armored personnel carriers, 100 now and 100 later. “We also need self-propelled mortars, additional missiles, MiGs,” Zelenskyy said.
On the civilian level, the Ukrainian president noted that important agreements regarding the economy have been concluded, and Poland, in particular, will take care of the reconstruction of Kharkiv.
On this first official visit, Zelensky visited Poland accompanied by First Lady Olena Zelenska, noting that she participates in humanitarian and medical projects. Thus, Ukrainian doctors are trained by their Polish colleagues in the field of complex care for burn victims and emergency air evacuation of the wounded, including in the war zone. “Dozens of our doctors have already completed or are currently undergoing such training. The project will continue with education in the field of rehabilitation and training of Ukrainian psychologists,” Zelensky announced, expressing gratitude to “Polish brothers and sisters” who are with Ukrainians in all areas, with “permanent, diverse and great.” – broad scale support”.
What else did Ukraine achieve this week?
Zelenskyi also said that this week the United States handed Ukraine the 35th defense package, which consists of missiles for Himars systems, air defense missiles, artillery shells, protection for armored vehicles and other support elements.
In addition, Germany’s support for Ukraine this week increased by 200 million euros – these are funds for investments in Ukraine. “We are talking, in particular, about the projects of German companies that will contribute to our economic and, accordingly, social stability,” Zelenskyy said.
For its part, the Netherlands announced a package of more than 270 million euros, which includes reconstruction aid, humanitarian aid, support for non-lethal defense and support for justice, which Zelensky called “very important”, explaining that it is to “gather evidence of Russian crimes and create register of damages caused by Russian aggression”.
For their part, Denmark and Norway are working on a joint package of projectile aid for Ukrainian artillery, Zelenskyi noted.
“There are new sanctions decisions from Australia and New Zealand,” the Kyiv leader also noted, thanking everyone for their support and help.
“I continued to address the parliaments of the world, and for the first time I addressed the parliament of Latin America, the parliament of Chile,” Zelensky emphasized. “In fact, the values for which we all fight here in Ukraine are close to every nation, regardless of how far they are geographically from us. Everyone values security and protection from terror. There is not a single nation that approves of what the Russian occupation has brought: Russian concentration camps, deportation of our children, rape of women, burning of cities,” Zelenskyy said. “The more the world learns about Russian aggression, the sooner the aggressor will lose and peace will return. This will return not only to Ukraine, but also to the whole world. Thanks to Chile for the support!”, added the President of Ukraine.
At the end of Saturday’s intervention, he thanked, as he does every evening, Ukrainian soldiers and all those who fight, including those who ensure the country’s cyber defense and communications, those who train new brigades, as well as those who are in the rear. of the front, those “who eliminate the consequences of strikes, who save people and who prepare sentences for the occupiers.”
