A new video released by the Ukrainian military shows its marines ambushing a convoy of Russian tanks and armored vehicles and attacking them with Javelin launchers and other anti-tank weapons.

The opening seconds of the footage show scenes reminiscent of the beginning of the war, showing a column of Russian tanks moving along the Indian line towards the front, apparently without air cover.

At 00:25, the first destroyed tank of the Russian army can be seen, and Ukrainian soldiers appear to be targeting the rear of the column, a classic tactic aimed at blocking the retreat of other combat vehicles.

Further, at 00:42 and 00:56, the destruction of two more Russian tanks can be seen in quick succession. Judging by the loud explosions, the combat vehicles appear to have been hit by Javelin anti-tank systems, although other weapons may have been used.

The footage then continues with a dramatic escape attempt by a BMP-2M armored personnel carrier after it has been rammed and burst into flames, with the footage showing the Russian crew desperately trying to escape the burning vehicle.

The video ends with another Russian tank trying to escape the carnage by leaving the field, but is quickly retreating. At minute 1:55, the tank seems to drive over a mine, but this is not enough to disable it.

The video ends with a spectacular explosion of one of the previously knocked out tanks, the result of the ammunition on board detonating as the retreating tank passes by.

Russian tanks were smashed near Avdiivka

Netizens independently identified the geolocation of the footage as having been taken in Vodyanye, Donetsk region, a village west of the city of Avdiyivka, where Russian troops have concentrated their attacks in recent days.

The Ministry of Defense of Great Britain, in its assessment of the war in Ukraine this Tuesday, noted that Russian armored forces suffered another defeat in the Donetsk region, trying to surround Avdiyivka.

“In recent days, Russia continues to give priority to the operation to encircle the city of Avdiyivka, Donetsk region. But Russian forces have made only modest progress with heavy armor losses,” said an assessment released Tuesday morning by the Ministry of Defense in London.

It is not clear if the footage now appearing on social networks shows part of this failure described a few days ago by the British, or if it is a repulsed attack.

The images again show what some Western analysts have recently pointed out, that Russian forces are not following their own combined arms doctrine, and tank forces are trying to advance here, apparently without infantry, artillery or air support.

The same type of uncoordinated attack led to an even bigger disaster near the town of Vugledar last month.
