There are many amazing projects that never saw the light of the car manufacturers, and few are mentioned in the press. If so, the information usually comes from talking to an engineer, and that’s exactly what happened to journalist Steve Sutcliffe of The Intercooler.
In an interview with Marcos Márquez, head of Porsche’s synthetic fuel project, the latter revealed some interesting details about a “secret” car that could be created immediately after the fabulous Porsche 918 Spyder.
Excellent technical passport
When talking about the four-cylinder Porsche Cayman, Marcos Marquez mentioned that the original idea for this engine was to develop a flat-eight engine for a completely different car.
Porsche even gave the green light to build a prototype with a real engine inside. And what an engine, as it was a 5.0-liter twin-turbo engine. The block is designed trifle 750 hp and 1000 Nm of torque.
Additionally, this model had a redline of over 9,000 rpm and was equipped with a manual transmission. Marcos Marquez is full of praise for this aborted project. In his eyes, it was a “Crazy car with great sound”. Porsche even tested the car on several roads near Weissach for more than a year before abruptly ending the project.
But why the sudden stop of this project? According to Marcos Márquez, the Stuttgart firm explained that this was not an issue “A good car for that time”.
The Porsche 918 Spyder will have descendants
A few years ago, Porsche showed off several concept cars that were never shown to the public. Among the ten models presented was, in particular, the Le Mans Living Legend of 2016, equipped, in particular, with an eight-cylinder engine. “sounds amazing”and certainly this particular model was the closest to the car anticipated at the time.
To replace the famous 918 Spyder, the German manufacturer has already announced that the successor will see the light of day, because “a hypercar is always part of Porsche’s strategy”, according to Oliver Blum, the boss of the brand. The leader clarified that it will not be launched before 2025 and only if this car brings a real advantage in terms of technology, like the 959 of its time, the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder.
