He was the first African-American judge to head the Manhattan prosecutor’s office: Alvin Bragg made history with the indictment against Donald Trump, the first for a former American president.
This 49-year-old Democrat, elected in November 2021 – like all magistrates in the United States – as a prosecutor in New York with jurisdiction in Manhattan, officially sued Donald Trump for his “affair” with Stormy Daniels, a former porn actress with whom had a relationship
The former US president is due to appear in court on Tuesday.
Taking office on Jan. 1, 2022, Harlem-born Bragg is also known for his progressive stance on crime policy and law enforcement.
He drew the ire of conservative Republicans when he advocated for alternatives to prison for minor offenses and pushed for fiscal affairs.
Growing up in Harlem in the 1980s and 1990s, he said he was deeply affected by crime, even as he witnessed the armed intervention of police whose treatment of minorities has been criticized.
“Without trust, we cannot have complete public safety,” said the Harvard-educated lawyer, who has worked for the New York state attorney general and federal prosecutors.
In January 2022, after replacing US Attorney Cyrus Vance, Alvin Bragg announced that he would no longer prosecute crimes that are considered minor, such as refusing to obey or resisting arrest.
In a metropolis of 8.5 million people infamous for its vast socioeconomic disparity and sometimes violent history, Bragg also promised to seek commutations for certain thefts.
According to this leftist judge, prison should also be considered as a last resort.
In the 2022 Trump-Stormy Daniels case, the New York Times accused Alvin Bragg of wanting to detain him before indicting the former president. As a result, two assistant prosecutors resigned in February 2022, denouncing the “doubts” Bragg allegedly expressed at the time about the investigation into Donald Trump.
In contrast, “Bragg was skillful and pragmatic,” praised former prosecutor Bennett Gershman, hailing the “aggressive investigation” against the 45th US president.
In addition, in January, Attorney General Bragg was able to fine the Trump Organization $1.6 million for fraud. The group’s former CFO, Allen Weisselberg, cooperated with the New York justice system and was sentenced to five months in prison and fined two million dollars.
Donald Trump was not prosecuted in the case, but regularly called Bragg a “racist” and a “leftist.”
In the Stormy Daniels case, the former president on Saturday accused the prosecutor of being “corrupt and highly politicized.”
These “attempts to intimidate us and threaten the rule of law in New York will not be tolerated,” the Manhattan prosecutor’s office warned. (Source: AFP)
