A US judge has ordered former Vice President Mike Pence to testify about conversations he had with Donald Trump before the attack on the Capitol, several media outlets reported on Tuesday, AFP reported.
Judge James Boasberg ruled that Pence must provide answers to a federal grand jury on any questions related to the investigation of possible crimes committed by the former president.
But Mike Pence may refuse to discuss his actions on the day of the attack, when he, as president of the Senate, approved the results of the 2020 presidential election, the same source said.
The judge’s decision, which has not been made public, is a partial victory for the Justice Department, which is investigating the attack on the Capitol that left multiple deaths and injuries of more than 100 police officers.
More than 1,000 people were arrested.
Donald Trump will run again in 2024, and Mike Pence could be among the contenders for the Republican nomination.
Investigators are looking into Trump’s role in the violence that broke out on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to stay in power after losing the presidential election to Joe Biden.
Pence, along with special prosecutor Jack Smith, appointed by the Department of Justice, can appeal the unfavorable parts of the decision.
