Rafael Nadal’s participation in the Monte Carlo Masters is in question

After director David Massi said Rafa was the first player to register for the competition, the Monte Carlo tournament’s official Twitter account suggested that Nadal would “definitely” take part in this year’s edition.

Rafa, who is still recovering from a left hip injury (sustained at the Australian Open), said he could not confirm he would compete in the tournament, which he has won a record 11 times.

“I don’t know who is getting this information. Obviously, if this were true, I would confirm it, but unfortunately I can’t. I’m doing my course and I don’t know when I’ll be able to play again, that’s true. I am in the phase of increasing the level of work. If I knew when I would be back, I would say, but I don’t.

I cannot confirm that I will be playing in Monte Carlo. Things are observed from day to day. I prefer to say things when I really know them” – Rafael Nadalquoted by Marca.

Rafael Nadal has dropped out of the ATP top 10 for the first time in nearly 18 years, with the Spaniard forced to withdraw from Indian Wells and the Miami Open.

Rafael Nadal, 36, has previously used Monte Carlo as a key event in his build-up to Roland Garros, the Grand Slam he has won 14 times (the Iberian has 22 major trophies).
