Cooperation between Athens University of Economics and Princeton University

The UNESCO Chair in Digital Methods in the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Graduate Program in Digital Methods in the Humanities of the Athens University of Economics and Business (OPA) are partnering with the Center for Digital Humanities at Princeton University (CDH). The European Arts and Humanities Research Infrastructure DARIAH-EU, organizing a five-day digital humanities workshop to be held at the Princeton Athens Center.

According to the Athens University of Economics and Business, this summer graduate students, PhDs and researchers from Greek universities and cultural heritage institutions will have the opportunity to collaborate with their colleagues at Princeton University in the US who want to start or promote their own digital research and research into Greek cultural legacy through digital approaches.

“The use of digital research methods in the field of Greek cultural heritage has increased significantly in recent years. OPA’s Master of Digital Methods for the Humanities, the longest-running postgraduate program in Digital Humanities in Greece, is a leader in training a new generation of researchers and professionals. On the other hand, CDH, one of the leading digital humanities centers in the US, is known for the development and implementation of research and development projects, as well as a wide network of collaborations. The DARIAH-EU infrastructure is finally a pan-European pole of cooperation in the field of digital services for the arts and humanities.

“We are particularly pleased to work with our Greek colleagues to compare our approaches and create a unique experience for humanities scholars studying Greek culture through digital methods,” said Natalia Ermolaeva, Executive Director of CDH. “The opportunity for intercultural learning is one of the main benefits of our connection to the DARIAH-EU infrastructure,” he added. “I am excited about this new collaboration,” says Ayatis Benardo, DARIAH-EU Director of Infrastructure and OPA PMS Instructor. “Osmosis of scientific fields and perspectives, and education in the digital humanities are central to the DARIAH-EU infrastructure strategy.”

OPA Rector Prof. Dimitris Burandonis commented: “Technology convergence with every scientific field is finding its way into the humanities through this collaboration. The Athens University of Economics and Business is innovating once again by opening high-level collaborations with leading international universities and research labs to enable outstanding scientists to create works that benefit culture, the individual and society. We are proud of the UNESCO Headquarters at OPA and the work of our wonderful scientists.”

Panos Constantinopoulos, Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and Chair of the UNESCO Chair in Digital Methods in the Humanities and Social Sciences at OPA, said: “We look forward to having an international group of students and researchers with us and conducting a fruitful interdisciplinary quest. This workshop will be a unique experience of intercultural cooperation and creativity for all participants.”

This important collaboration is signed by the Seeger Center for Greek Studies at Princeton University, a dynamic center for a variety of academic programs aimed at advancing the study of the Greek world from antiquity to the present day. The workshop will take place at the Princeton Center for Greek Studies and Studies in Athens, located in Pagrati. Seeger CHS Director Dr. Dimitris Gondikas said: “Since its founding in 1979, the Seeger Center for Greek Studies at Princeton University has served academic excellence by offering high-level interdisciplinary research and teaching on Greek culture throughout its history, from antiquity to the present day. At the same time, through numerous scholarship programs, we promote collaboration with Hellenists from all over the world and in particular with fellow professors, researchers and students from Greece. For 7 years, the Princeton Athens Center has been a center for academic research and a venue for scientific meetings. We look forward to hosting our first Digital Humanities Summer Workshop this year in collaboration with the Athens University of Economics and Business.”
