Women are “the main garbage” in most countries of the world, Pope Francis said on Saturday, condemning the situation, which he called “a scourge”, Italian news agency ANSA reported, as quoted by Agerpres.

“It is necessary to respect the dignity and fundamental rights of every person: education, work, freedom of speech, etc. This is especially true for women, as they are more vulnerable to violence and abuse,” Pope Francis said.

“A woman is the main waste. We cannot remain silent in the face of this calamity of our time,” said the Argentine pontiff, who is marking the 10th anniversary of his papacy on Monday.

“The woman is being used,” he said. “You are paid less because you are a woman. Then if I see you’re pregnant, I’ll take your job. This is a custom that is used in big cities, for example, in the decree,” the Pope added.

“Let’s not allow women to become victims of violence, exploitation, marginalization and undue pressure without a voice. Let us be the voice of their pain and strongly condemn the injustices they suffer, often in contexts that deprive them of any possibility of protection and salvation,” the Vatican leader said.
