Study: Long-term Covid-19 much less likely after Omicron infection

OUR Omicron is much less likely to lead to prolonged Covid-19 compared to its variants corona virus which was distributed at the beginning of this pandemic, shows a new Swiss scientific study. Also protracted covid this is no more likely in people with a first infection due to Omicron than in people who have never been infected with the coronavirus.

Researchers led by Dr. Karol Strahm from the Department of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology at Canton Hospital St. Gallen, who made the announcement at the annual conference of the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in Copenhagen, analyzed data from 1,201 health care providers. workers (81% women) with an average age of 43, followed by an average of 18 months.

It found that participants who were infected with the original coronavirus were 67% more likely to report persistent symptoms over several months than those who had never been infected with Covid-19.

In addition, those who had a first infection due to the omicron variant (BA1) were no more likely to have long-term Covid-19 than those who had never had Covid-19. Re-infection with Omicron after initial infection with the original variant of the virus has also not been found to increase the risk of long-term Covid-19 or long-term fatigue.

“Prolonged Covid-19 is a major public health issue with a long-term – often debilitating – illness, limited treatment options and an uncertain outcome. Our study shows that those who first contract Covid-19 from Omicron do not develop significant long-term symptoms of Covid-19. “With Omicron still dominating the world, our findings should reassure those who contracted the coronavirus for the first time, as well as those who had previously been ill with it,” Dr. Strahm said.
