“The Plenum of Presidents of the Hellenic Bar Associations, meeting on 5 March 2023 via teleconference regarding the recent fatal train accident, issued the following statement:

1. The Plenum expresses sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to the victims.

We stand in shock before this tragedy with dozens of young victims. Our mind cannot contain it.

The state is obliged directly, without hesitation, to guarantee and take responsibility for comprehensive and multi-level support for the families of the dead and injured.

2. It is absolutely necessary to promptly and fully investigate the causes of the accident and assign liability, if any.

It is necessary to give clear answers to all the questions that concern the Greek society and related to the safety of the railway network.

Due to the seriousness of the case, the investigation should be entrusted to a special investigator of the appellate instance.

3. The Plenary decided to establish a Committee from among its members to investigate, from a legal and material point of view, the possible interference of the country’s bar associations, namely in connection with the special legal interest they have, under article 90 of the Lawyers’ Code, either in filing a claim or in by a representation in support of the prosecution in a pending criminal trial and in ANY WAY he wanted to be held accountable.

4. The Plenum strongly and unequivocally condemns any behavior of a lawyer who tries to take advantage of human suffering in connection with a tragic incident.

Any conduct by a colleague that is contrary to the Code of Ethics and reflects the prestige and dignity of the profession of lawyer is subject to disciplinary control, and the competent disciplinary bodies of each Association are required to take immediate action. “.
