According to two US officials quoted by CNN, on Friday, around the time of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to the White House, an announcement of an aid package to Ukraine worth about $400 million is expected.
The package will include ammunition for HIMARS rocket launchers and various artillery systems such as 155 mm and 105 mm. It will also include, for the first time, bridges that roll over armored vehicles, a system used to cross trenches and waterways, officials said.
On Thursday, John Kirby, the National Security Council’s strategic communications coordinator, said the US would announce another round of aid to Ukraine, including ammunition and HIMARS artillery, but did not specify the amount.
This security assistance will come directly from US stockpiles managed by the Presidential Reductions Administration (PDA), meaning weapons and equipment can quickly reach Ukraine.
Last week, the US announced $2 billion in aid under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which contracts with industry to buy supplies and needs more time.
Ukrainian officials have also pushed for the release of American F-16 fighter jets, something President Joe Biden and other Western leaders have so far opposed.
With the package expected on Friday, the US has given Ukraine a total of more than $32 billion since the war began more than a year ago.
