To date, 26 people have been killed and 85 injured in a train collision that occurred just before midnight near Tempe.

According to the first official information from the fire brigade, 40 firefighters with 17 vehicles are working at the scene, where 30 ambulances arrived, assisted by the Greek police. The derailed wagons were dismantled. The tragic accident occurred in the Evangelismos area, not far from Larissa and Tempi.

The Larisa University Hospital is on duty due to the tragic event, while the Larisa General Hospital and the Katerini Hospital were opened on an emergency basis. The Papanicolaou and Gennimata hospitals, which have a special ward for burn patients, are on alert. For the same reason, the hospitals of Attica were put on alert.

The First Army and military units of Thessaly entered into a protocol of combat readiness, as provided for in case of such incidents. The military hospitals of Athens and Thessaloniki are put on alert in case of need to receive the wounded.

The extraction process is ongoing and carried out under very difficult conditions due to the severity of the collision between the two trains.

Most of the passengers have been taken to a safe place.

Anxiety

The state apparatus has been put on alert. Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Christos Stylianidis has been at the Civil Protection Crisis Management Joint Coordination Center since the first moment, together with Deputy Minister Evangelos Tournas, Deputy Prime Minister Yiannis Bratakos and Head of the Fire Brigade Giorgos Pournaras. Citizens Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos is at the ELAS Operations Center along with Corps Chief Konstantinos Skumas, while fire and police officers are at the scene and at hospitals to register the dead and injured.

It is recalled that at the time of the collision, there were about 350 passengers in one of the two trains, according to the Hellenic Train about the tragic accident in Tempi.
