The story of a cocaine-addicted killer bear climbed to second place at the North American box office in its opening weekend, while Marvel’s new superhero movie continues to claim the top spot, AFP and News.ro reported.
After a wildly successful opening weekend grossing $118 million, the Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania remained the top-grossing film in North American theaters, although ticket sales dropped significantly.
The feature film, starring actor Paul Rudd as Ant-Man alongside actress Evangeline Lilly, has grossed more than $32 million in the past three days.
In second place with $23 million in revenue is the new black comedy from Universal Studios, Cocaine Bear.
The film was inspired by an event in 1985, when smugglers dropped packages of cocaine from a plane in a forest in the southern United States, and then an 80-kilogram black bear ate them.
The story that inspired “Cocaine Bear”
American police discovered the body of Andrew Thornton, a drug dealer and former police officer who was part of the anti-narcotics unit, in the yard of a house in the area. The man was wearing a parachute, Gucci shoes and a bag with 35 kilograms of cocaine.
Investigators believe Thornton was aboard a small plane transporting drugs from Colombia and that he dropped some of the drugs in nearby woods with the intention of finding them later. Investigators also found drugs thrown from the plane, as well as the remains of a bear that died after eating the smuggler’s million-dollar stash.
The coroner handling the case noted at the time that the bear would have died after three to four grams of the amount of cocaine it consumed had entered its bloodstream. His body was discovered about a month after his death, in a deep stage of decomposition.
However, in the film that is out now, the bear does not die of an overdose, but begins a crime epic.
The Jesus Revolutionin third place, also inspired by a real story: about a Californian hippie from the early 70s, Christian, who destroys a more traditional church and gathers around him hundreds of young people immersed in a counterculture with mystical accents.
The John Erwin and Brent McCorkle film grossed $15 million in its opening weekend in theaters.
“Puss in Boots”, a success beyond expectations at the box office
He is in fourth placeAvatar 2: The Way of Water, grossing $4.7 million in its 11th week in theaters. It recently became the third highest-grossing film of all time.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wisha children’s film from his universe Shrekranks fifth with $4.1 million in its week of release.
Despite the fact that the voice actors of the film include some of the most famous names in Hollywood (Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman), the success of this animated film far exceeded the expectations of its producers.
The top ends:
- Charming Mike ($3 million)
- A knock on the cabin ($1.9 million),
- 80 for Brady ($1.8 million),
- Absent ($1 million)
- A man named Otto ($850,000).
