Washington, Berlin and Warsaw are considering organizing joint NATO military exercises in Poland in the near future in the face of the Russian threat on the eastern front, Germany’s defense minister said on Sunday evening, AFP reports.
“There are thoughts” on this topic, Boris Pistorius said on the air of the public channel ARD, noting that “for now” he does not want to confirm or give details.
He added that the idea of these joint military maneuvers in a country that shares a border with Ukraine would be to send a “very clear” signal both within the North Atlantic Alliance and to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin. “
The German minister assured that NATO is “far from being as weak as was believed for a long time”, but “much stronger and more united than last year”, before Russia’s offensive in Ukraine.
The goal would also be to reassure NATO’s “eastern front” by “showing the countries of Eastern Europe, such as Poland, the Baltic states, Slovakia and others, that Germany, as the most important European member of the Alliance, and the US as a transatlantic partner, it respects the defense commitments under organization,” Pistorius noted.
