Two young people, a girl and a 19-year-old boy, were killed and two others were injured in a road accident in the Michelangelo Passage in Timisoara. The young man was part of the Delta Force robotics team from Arad, the 2022 world champion. The city’s mayor, Dominik Fritz, responded on Friday, saying there had been 78,796 speeding violations on the stretch in the last ten days: “I refuse to remain silent and thereby become complicit in a state that kills through laziness.”

The accident happened on the night from Wednesday to Thursday in the Michelangelo Passage in Timisoara. Two young people, a 19-year-old girl and a 19-year-old boy, were killed, as well as the driver, an 18-year-old boy who obtained his driver’s license less than three months ago, and the passenger on the right, a 20-year-old man, was seriously injured, writes Opinia Timișoara.

  • “I refuse to remain silent and thereby become an accomplice of a state that kills through laziness.
  • Yesterday, two 19-year-old boys died in a terrible accident on the Michelangelo Passage.
  • The driver probably knew that, regardless of the speed at which he was driving, he would not be fined,” Timisoara’s mayor wrote on Facebook on Friday.

According to him, in just ten days, the radars installed by the city hall recorded 78,796 violations of the speed limit in this passage.

Earlier this week, Fritz posted footage of a car that he says “flew” through a crossing at 90 miles per hour, and no one fined the driver or suspended his driver’s license, so he continues to share it.

  • “We have photos of the license plates of each of the more than 78,000 drivers who aggressively stepped on the gas pedal. What do we do with them? nothing We are obliged to delete them no later than after 30 days, because the traffic police cannot use them.
  • I sent all the details to the police last year. Result? The investigation of the State Control over the Processing of Personal Data, the purpose of which is also… the City Hall (!). They began to investigate whether we had sufficiently protected the personal data of drivers who do not obey the law by passing this data on to the police.
  • I confess, sometimes I also think that we live in Absurdistan. A state that wants it to be weak is afraid to enforce rules for everyone and punish those who risk the lives of others.
  • I am asking the police to find a solution to use the data recorded by radars and fine drivers who endanger lives. We cannot continue to ignore almost 240,000 speed violations month after month in one place in Timisoara forever.
  • I strongly ask the parliament and the government once and for all to clarify and simplify the legislation and include municipal roads in a system of stationary cameras that can issue automatic fines.
  • How many more must die for us to get out of this self-imposed institutional impotence?”, writes Fritz.

One of the young men was part of the Delta Force robotics team from Arad, the 2022 world champion

All four young people involved in the accident were students of the Polytechnic in Timișoara, Opinia Timișoara also writes.

One of the young people who lost their lives, Denuc Tol, was a member of the Delta Force robotics team from Arad, the 2022 world champion, the team’s mentor Corina Botošan confirmed, radiotimisoara.ro reported.

  • “We are shocked by the sad news we have received, I cannot find words to express my pain. Denutz has been a member of Delta Force since the team’s second year of existence, more than four years.
  • He was a very dedicated child and passionate about robotics, and participated in the new FIRST Robotics project, whose championship will be held next month in Istanbul, and where we are the only participating team from Romania,” said Corina Botoşan.
