Mindhunter: it’s official, there won’t be a third season – David Fincher says

Almost four years have passed since FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCollany) come face to face with a complex case and ruthless serial killers.

And although in the years since the second season finale, many fans of his series David Finchermind hunter“produced Netflix hoped for a continuation of the story, it’s now confirmed that there won’t be a new round of episodes.

In a new interview, Fincher cites the streaming service’s infamous financial model as the main reason why there won’t be a third season of the show.

“I am very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive series, and according to Netflix, we haven’t attracted enough audience to justify such an investment,” the director told French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche. “I don’t blame them, they took the risk to bring the design to life, gave me the freedom to shape the characters the way I wanted, and allowed me to go on new paths with The Killer. It’s a blessing to be able to work with brave people.”

In earlier statements, Fincher revealed that burnout was another reason why Mindhunter was dropped. He explains: “We filmed the first season of the show without a creator and I replaced him every week. We started getting scripts for the second season and I ended up looking at what was written and deciding if I liked it or not. So we threw it away and started over,” he told Vulture in 2020. He added: “It’s a 90-hour week job. It consumes everything in your life. When I finished, I was exhausted and said, “I don’t know if I can do the third season now.”

But even then, he talked about the financial issue, knowing that “for the ratings he had, it was an expensive series.” Perhaps Netflix would green-light a new cycle of episodes if it lowered production costs, “but I honestly don’t think we would have made a show for less money than a second season.”
