Almost 2,000 people are stationed in Russia in Transnistria, and there are suspicions that it wants to open a new front on Ukraine from the territory of Moldova. In an interview with La Repubblica, the President of Ukraine was asked how he would react if President Maia Sandu turned to him and asked for help.

Zelensky recalled that he received information from his intelligence that Russia wants to take advantage of the fact that Moldova is not a member of NATO or the EU and replace the pro-Western leadership of Moldova. “I sent this information to President Maia Sandu. Soon after that, it was also confirmed by European countries,” Zelenskyy said.

He explained why the Russians would be interested in taking control of Chisinau – the main interest is the airport. “The Russians planned all this a long time ago. However, Moldova and Russia do not have a common state border. So how should he implement his plan (to open a new front in Ukraine from Moldova – no)? Where would they send their troops and equipment from? For this, the Russians need airports. But now there is only one airport in Moldova, in the capital Chisinau. Therefore, they should use this airport and all the resources of Transnistria,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained.

He also said that President Maia Sandu never asked him for help but thanked him for the information. “She knows our situation very well. Ukraine will always be ready to help Moldova,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy assured.
