Ioannina Mayor Moses Elisaf has died at the age of 68.

The municipality of Ioanniton announced that the mayor had encountered “an unforeseen health problem during a planned trip” and was in an Athens hospital.

Politician, academician and physician Moses Elisaf was born in 1954 in Ioannina. His parents were Holocaust survivors and managed to escape the concentration in which most of the Jews of Ioannina were deported to Auschwitz.

He studied medicine at the University of Athens and specialized in pathology.

He was elected mayor of Ioannina in the 2019 municipal elections. This was the first mayoral election of Jewish origin in Greece. In the election campaign in the 161 constituencies of the municipality of Ioannito, the share of the faction of Moses Elisaf reached 50.33%, while the former mayor Thomas Begas gained 49.67%.

Moses Elisaf was a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Israel Council for many years. For two decades he was president of the Israeli community of Janina.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Athens in 1979 and has worked at the Research Institute of Lipids and Atherosclerosis, Sheba Medical Center, Sackler Medical School, Tel Aviv University.

He was professor of pathology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ioannina and director of the 2nd PGNI Pathology Clinic. He also ran outpatient clinics for lipid metabolism and obesity, where many patients are seen.

He has served as Municipal Councilor on multiple occasions and was President of the Non-Profit Enterprise for Culture, Environment, Youth and Sports of the Municipality of Ioannita from 2011 to 2014.
